Thirteen

I strode along the quiet lake at a fast pace, watching water skiers enjoying its amenities, and wondered if that was something I’d ever like to try. Maybe at some point. I’d need to make friends with someone who had a boat first.

My increased heart rate and the fresh oxygen flowing through my body did wonders for my stress. Perhaps I’d be like several of my neighbors, and I’d make an evening walk part of my daily routine, too. At least until the snow fell. From what I’d heard, Honeysuckle Springs would get a lot.

Looking ahead at the large outcropping of rocks, I figured I was near the end of the trail. I’d heard the pathway didn’t go completely around the lake, and now I’d discovered that firsthand. Still, I was disappointed that I’d have to turn around and walk past the police tape again.

When I glanced back across the lake, I could see that my house was a fair distance away, and my stomach reminded me that I normally had started cooking dinner by now.

But I wasn’t ready to go back. At the base of the rocky hillside where I stood, my troubles didn’t exist. There was nothing but me, beautiful surroundings, and an overwhelming sense of peace.

I planted myself on a large rock that was still small enough to sit on, and the coolness from it seeped through my jeans. I relaxed, only to experience a tiny flutter in my chest.

A knowing, maybe? It was as if I’d connected with the energy around me, and it reminded me that life was abundant everywhere. In the depths of the shimmering lake and the swaying of branches overhead. The tips of the wild grasses next to me bobbed on the subtle wisps of a breeze that brushed past. Nearby, a dragonfly flitted, going about its business unaware of me or anything else around it.

When it came to land on the grass strands I’d been watching, I widened my eyes in surprise. It studied me for a moment before taking to the air to continue its investigative rounds over the surrounding foliage. Nature, with its energy and beauty in all things no matter how large, small, or insignificant, astounded me. Everything around me was all part of the life everyone lived.

I inhaled a deep breath of refreshing air, feeling as if I’d had a crazy epiphany about life. Maybe I had.

I stood, ready to head back, when a stronger, more unique sensation rolled over me. Through the nearby trees, I spotted an obscure path. It wasn’t well used, but an inner feeling drew me in that direction anyway.

I wouldn’t go far. It was getting late, and I wasn’t oblivious to the fact that I was a female walking alone in a mostly deserted area. But I needed to know what lay amidst those trees.

After passing between densely growing pines, I paused with my senses heightened, listening carefully while focusing on the energetic forces at the same time. The feeling still drew me forward.
